A Most Beautiful Thing chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in the nation (made up of young men from the West Side of Chicago, many of whom were from rival gangs, all coming together to row in the same boat.) Based on Arshay Cooper’s memoir (republished by Flatiron under the title, A Most Beautiful Thing. Click this link to purchase the memoir from Flatiron Books).

The film takes a deep dive into the backstories of these young men, examining the issues of intergenerational trauma and violence. As the team’s captain, Arshay Cooper, reflected, “When we were on the water, we were in a place where we couldn’t hear the sound of sirens or bullets, and that allowed us to shape a different vision for ourselves, of who and what we could become. And that was a beautiful thing.”

Three Rivers Rowing Association is proud to host a digital viewing of the film and a Diversity & Inclusion Panel. The panel will feature Arshay Cooper (author of A Most Beautiful Thing), Richard Butler (Member of the USRowing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee), and Carol Schoenecker (Head Coach of Robert Morris University Rowing & TRRA Board Member). The panel will focus on actionable ways to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sport of rowing and here locally in Pittsburgh.

A donation of $30 will provide you with a unique website and code with which you can digitally access the film as well as a unique link at which to join the panel.

A donation of $20 will provide you with a unique link at which to join the panel but no film access.

All proceeds raised will directly benefit Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts that are currently being pursued by Three Rivers Rowing Association.
